Google Workspace extensions for Gmail, Drive, and Docs are now available in open beta for Gemini
What’s changing
Google is pleased to announce that the Google Workspace extension for Gmail, Google Drive and Google Docs – all available now on Gemini (gemini.google.com). When enabled, Gemini will be able to cross-reference these applications as data sources to provide better feedback.
This feature is available in open beta for Google Workspace customers with the Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, and Education Premium add-ons — no additional subscription required.

Why you’d use it
The Google Workspace extension enhances Gemini's capabilities by allowing it to access information from your Gmail, Docs, and Drive. This allows Gemini to locate, reference and combine this additional data, resulting in more informed and relevant responses. This deeper integration helps bring Gemini capabilities more seamlessly into your daily workflow, helping to increase productivity. For example, refer to the Doc file that outlines your target audience while doing customer research in Gemini (gemini.google.com).
Additional details
- During the open beta, Context-Aware Access (CAA) for Gmail, Drive, and Docs is not supported with the Google Workspace extension. Contextual access allows you to control which applications users can access based on their context, such as whether their device complies with your IT policies. Learn more about Context-Aware Access.
- Google Workspace extensions respect access control settings for files in Drive, meaning users can only access files they own or have been shared with (excluding shared files). shared via Shared Drive).
- Google Workspace extension is Not available to Google Workspace users who access Gemini as an additional Google service.
- Please note that the personal Google Workspace content that Gemini Apps receives from the extension is not reviewed by anyone to improve the AI model, is not used to train the AI model, and is not shared with other users or organizations. Learn more at here.

- Admins
- This feature will be OFF by default and can be enabled at the OU or Group level. During the open beta period, Drive, Gmail and Docs must be enabled to use Google Workspace extensions.
