Google Chat lets you mark read with direct messages

Quick summary

No sooner than October 5, you'll be able to see when your Google Chat direct messages are viewed. This only applies in active chat frames for live chats on Android, iOS, and web. In these messages, you'll see the profile picture of the person you're chatting with to the right of the last message they viewed.

See when your Google Chat messages have been read

Marked as read is shown to the sender when the recipient has read the message or if the recipient has replied to the message from a notification. Marked as read will not appear in rooms or group messages

This feature was previously available in classic Hangouts and is now available in Google Chat.

Admin: There is no administrative control for this feature.
