Google Meet adds background change control feature
What is changing?
Google is adding the ability for admins to turn usage on or off custom wallpapers or pre-installed wallpapers in Google Meet for meetings at the organizational unit (OU) level.
This setting determines whether meeting participants can change the background image when joining the meeting. For example, when installed TURN OFF for the meeting organizer, that meeting participant won't have the option to change their background image – including their own settings.
Getting started
- Admin: This feature will be ON by default and can be disabled at the organizational unit or team level. Note: the “Allow users to choose custom images” option is disabled by default for Education and Enterprise for Education domains. Visit the Help Center to learn more about how control whether users can change their background image in Meet.
In the Google Meet section of the Admin console, in the Meet video settings, you can control whether users can change their background in Meet.
- End User: No action required. When enabled by your administrator, visit the Help Center to learn more about how change your background in video meeting.
Release time
- Rapid and Scheduled Release domains: Gradual release (up to 15 days for feature visibility) starting January 27, 2021
Availability
- Available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus, as well as G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofits customers.
